We all want our kid(s) to be active - and to enjoy it - so that they can grow up to be adults who are fit and healthy. But what's the secret ingredient to getting them hooked? Activity that your child ENJOYS. So, from a young age, it's super important to help your kids(s) be active in ways that are fun, so that it doesn't become something that they have to do, but rather something that they want to do.
Here are 3 things you can do with your kids on a daily basis to help cultivate the habit of being active long term:
- Walk anywhere that you can. Walking with your kid(s) teaches them that it is an easy, fun and surprisingly quick way to get places. Walking every day (rain or shine) means that they'll be good at it and it'll become a habit that they won't have to think about. To make the walk more fun you could go on "missions" together or play games like "I spy" or "hide-and-go-seek" as you go. Walking is also a mode of active transportation, which is an eco-friendly habit you probably want to pass on to your kid(s).
- Encourage your kid(s)s to play with active toys like jump ropes, balls (of all sizes) and even mini trampolines or scooters. The best way to encourage your kid(s) is to just play with them. It doesn't have to be for a long time but role modelling when it comes to being active is so, so important.
- Dance. It sounds like a silly way to be active but dancing is a great way to get your kid(s) moving as well as develop rhythm, self-expression, coordination (or kinesthetic intelligence) and even appreciation for their body. Putting on some music and dancing is something that's so easy to integrate on a regular basis. Also, you don't have to be a great dancer to dance with your kid(s) because they don't know if you've "got the moves" or not.
Most importantly, enjoy being active, especially when being active with your kids. Like mentioned earlier, role modelling is essential for this habit.
